Spooky Brew Review 2008 Homebrew Competition
| October 25, 2008 | ||
| 9:00 am | to | 5:00 pm |
The Spooky Brew Review homebrew competition is celebrating its 17th consecutive year.
Our host this year will be the famed Goose Island Clybourn brewpub, in what sadly may be the swan song at this venerable location. As usual, SBR will feature judging in all categories of the BJCP Style Guidelines. But the highlight is always the judging of the special Spooky (scariest) and Smashed Pumpkin (Worst of Show) categories - these should not be missed. For the second year in a row, we’ll also include Witches’ Brew, an open category for beer, mead, and cider brewed only by women.
NOTE: All entries for the Spooky and Smashed Pumpkin categories must be drinkable. Anything deemed unconsumable by the Competition Committee will be DISQUALIFIED.
So, please plan on entering, judging, stewarding, or just attending Spooky Brew Review 2008 — it definitely doesn’t get any crazier than this!
The competition announcement, entry forms, bottle labels, judge registration/waiver forms, and the latest BJCP Style Guidelines are all available in PDF (Portable Document Format).

I stopped by to see if entry forms are available yet. This page says that they should be posted to the site by September 15th, but I can’t find them. Help!

Are there any details on this event yet?
Stevie on 28 Sep 2008 at 11:37 am #
Sorry for the delay in getting the entry form posted. It’s now available via a link above.

I was a little confused about entering the spooky brew category. It says “decorate or doctor up” your beer and enter it as a spooky brew, scariest beer. Does that mean that bottle can be decorated–labels and such?
Stevie on 30 Sep 2008 at 8:47 pm #
Yes, extravagant decorations are perfectly appropriate and are sure to bias the judges in your direction.

Will the judging occur the day of the event? What time?
I am bottling a beer tomorrow that I can drop off at Goose Island before Friday, but it will need until the 25th or so to carbonate.
Thanks,

Yes, judging occurs only on October 25, the day of the event. There are usually judging sessions in the morning and the afternoon. Your beer could be judged in either session - it just depends on the style category. The first judging session typically starts around 9 am.

Thanks steve.

Approximately what time will the awards be given?
Stevie on 20 Oct 2008 at 7:02 pm #
That depends on the ultimate size of the competition and the length of the judging sessions. But typically it’s no later than 4 pm.

So I dropped off my bottles on Friday, but they didn’t want the entrance form or the money submission. Can I bring those on the day of the event, and if so, do I have to be there at nine? That’s a little early for me on a Sat., but if so, I’ll do it.
Also, how does Goose Island work beer drinking there? I mean, can I bring more of my homebrew to share, will we get to taste the left over beers and winners, etc…? I’d hate to invite all my friends and then they didn’t get to try anything when they got there. Or worse, show up with beer in hand and not be allowed to open it in Goose Island.
Thanks!

Kris - In general, loose entries are difficult. Even when dropped off in person, it’s best if they are in some kind of package, with bottles, forms, and fees inside so things don’t get misplaced. A 6-pack carrier will usually do; better yet a 6-pack inside a paper sack that’s stapled closed and marked clearly. Who’d you give it to? While we try to track down your bottles, we’re going to need the information from the form(s) so we can include it in the judging. Please email me at roger at chibeer.org with as many details as possible so we can sort this out.
On Saturday, there won’t be much to watch or do for most of the day. It’s not a homebrew event like First Thursday where we’re all sharing - most of us will be very busy judging. The bar will open at 11AM for Goose Island beer and food. The awards ceremony will be at mid-afternoon, and will be the only interesting part of the whole day for spectators.

I also dropped off two entries (2 bottles each) last week and they did not want to take the entrance fee or the applications. They told me that both were to be turned in to the Chi beer Club directly on the day of the event. Each of my bottles have the labels attached via rubber bands and the four are in a Maudite four pack carrier. Let me know what you need me to do.

Timothy, please send me email at roger at chibeer.org ASAP so we can try to find them. Include in your email the basic information from your entry forms. (Name, address, email address, etc) At this point, the most important thing is the style category numbers of your entries, so we can figure out the groupings and judge assignments for Saturday.

Any word on results?
Michael Pearson on 26 Oct 2008 at 7:44 pm #
I’m reading these comments the day after the competition. I too dropped my entries off in a 6-pack with payment and forms at Goose Island. I hope they made it to the competition.
Russ on 28 Oct 2008 at 3:06 pm #
Uh oh. My friend dropped my entries off at GI Clybourn the day entries were due and they took it without a problem. I assumed that meant the beers would make it to the competition… I hope that assumption was correct!

Any info on when the results will be posted? Thanks!
