Yes, I'm the guy who replied around 7:30 yesterday morning and said it was still on "but I imagine we'll have to make a definitive call within the next couple of hours." Sorry, but I couldn't get back to you later as I had to pick up beers and ice and set up taps at the picnic site.

But I did recommend that you monitor the CBS-HB listserv for breaking news. Roger Deschner supplied numerous updates there throughout the morning, including this at 10:52 am:

"The rain has slowed down. We can picnic, somewhat damply, if you can get there. The rivers are NOT projected to flood until Sunday afternoon when Hurricane Ike hits us with yet more rain. Reports from early rib cookers say the picnic area is high and not flooded.

There's going to be less beer, less food, and also fewer people. Should be enough."

Many people emailed the website during the morning and my standard reply was that the picnic was officially on but that you had to use good judgment. Traffic was horrendous for many who wanted to get there but couldn't. And even if you made it, conditions were very wet.

To anyone who wanted to go and were discouraged by my email replies, I'm sorry.

Amazingly, the picnic was held and was remarkably attended by about 100 extraordinary beer devotees. I know more of you - like Donald Romans - would have been there if not for the horrendous weather and the traffic that ensued.

We cut back on the original list of beers, but we had more than enough for the soaked loyalists. Only 3 ribbers competed, but the chili, salsa, and dessert competitions were still hotly contested (results to be posted here very soon, I promise).

Thanks to everyone who attended and took everything in stride. A good time was had by all.

What happened at the picnic? I couldn't get there because Edens was closed. If it was rained out, will it be rescheduled? Thanks, Don Romans
